5 Things to Know About Water Damage

11/3/2022 (Permalink)

As a homeowner, you need to make sure that you're prepared to protect your home from peril. Water damage can manifest itself in all sorts of ways, whether it's from excessive rainfall, a pipe burst or toilet overflow. Arm yourself with knowledge and study the following tips regarding residential water damage.

1. Call Your Insurance Company Immediately.
If you discover flooding or another type of water damage, you need to contact your insurance company immediately. Your insurance agent can file a claim much more quickly, as well as walk you through the initial damage remediation steps.

2. There's No Time to Waste.
Remediating water damage is all about efficiency. Once the initial accident occurs, it's a race against the clock to see how quickly you can resolve the situation. Secondary damage, such as mold growth, only requires 24 hours to set in.

3. Flood Water Comes in 3 Different Categories.
Flood water is categorized based upon the types of contaminants present. Category 3, also known as black water, poses a significant health hazard and must be handled much more carefully than Category 1, which originates from your water line. Black water floods are also capable of inflicting significantly more damage.

4. Flood Damage and Water Damage Are Not the Same.
Your insurance company treats each disaster differently, depending on the source of the damage. Damage caused by a pipe burst, or other internal accident, is considered water damage. Damage that resulted from a nearby body of water that overflowed onto your property is considered flood damage.

5. Flood Damage is Not Covered by Homeowner's Insurance.
If you live in an area that is more susceptible to flooding, then it's a good idea to purchase a separate flood insurance policy. You also should sit down with your insurance agent to discuss exactly which scenarios your current homeowner's insurance policy actually does cover.
There are steps you can take to help deter water damage, but there's no way to guarantee absolute immunity. If your property has recently suffered a pipe burst, severe flood or other type of water damage, make sure to contact storm remediation experts as soon as possible.

Water Heater Damage Woes in Shorewood Home?

5/31/2022 (Permalink)

We respond to water damage emergencies 24-hours a day in Will County.

Water heaters should be serviced and maintained by qualified professionals. Our local team in Plainfield and Naperville South shares these tips for Shorewood from the National Board of Boiler and Pressure Vessel Inspectors:

Use a qualified service professional for the following:

  • Burners should be cleaned once a year for gas and oil-fired water heaters. Have the service professional inspect flues and vents for cracks or loose connections that could leak deadly exhaust gases.

  • Have a qualified plumber replace your anode rod once every two to five years

  • The service life of a temperature and pressure (T & P) valve is usually three years. Even if a T & P valve looks fine from the outside, manufacturers recommend they be removed and visually inspected for accumulations of corrosion deposits
  • Call a qualified plumber if your water tank is leaking.
    • If the T & P valve is discharging water or steam, the ONLY safe intervention is to remove the heat source by cutting off its fuel, if you can. For an electric heater, trip the circuit breaker; for a gas heater, shut off the gas.
    • If your water heater overheats, call a qualified plumber and allow the water heater to cool naturally. Never try to relieve the pressure yourself. Never add cool water to the tank, and never try to cool it by spraying it with a hose.

High Water Usage in Aurora?

2/1/2022 (Permalink)

We are trusted leaders in water damage restoration in Kane and DuPage counties.

SERVPRO® of Plainfield/Naperville South has been restoring water damage for Aurora residents for many years. Checking your winter water usage is a good way to determine if you have a hidden water leak. Many water leaks are not visible, but according to the  Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), minor water leaks cause more than one trillion gallons of water to be wasted in United States homes each year. Here are some ways to detect water leaks from the EPA:

  • An excellent method to check for leaks is to examine your winter water use. A family of four likely has a serious leak problem if its winter water use exceeds 12,000 gallons per month.
  • Check your water meter before and after a two-hour period when no water is being used. If the meter does not read exactly the same, you probably have a leak.
  • To check for a toilet bowl leak, place a drop of food coloring in the toilet tank. You have a leak if the color shows up in the bowl within ten minutes without flushing.

Burst Pipe in Naperville?

We are leaders in water damage restoration in DuPage County.

The winter cold season in Illinois lasts for 3.2 months, and January is the coldest month of the year, with an average low of 22 degrees and a high of 33 degrees Fahrenheit. SERVPRO® of Plainfield/Naperville South has been helping Naperville residents with water damage issues for many years. We know that our fast emergency response time saves our customers time and money in many cases.

Here are some tips from the Insurance Information Institute on what you can do if your pipes become frozen:

  • If you discover that pipes are frozen, don’t wait for them to burst. Take measures to thaw them immediately or call a plumber for assistance.
  • If your pipes burst, first turn off the water and then mop up spills. You don’t want the water to do more damage than it already has.
  • Call your agent or company as soon as you can. An insurance adjuster doesn’t need to see the spill before you take action. However, they will want to inspect any damaged items.
  • Make temporary repairs and take other steps to protect your property from further damage. Remove any carpet or furniture that can be further damaged from seepage.
  • Make a list of the damaged articles and save your receipts for insurance reimbursement

Water Intrusion in Bolingbrook?

12/7/2021 (Permalink)

We restore water damage 24-hours a day in Will and DuPage Counties.

Water intrusion happens when water enters a structure from outside and causes water damage.  SERVPRO® of Plainfield/Naperville South has been restoring water damage for Bolingbrook residents and businesses for many years and offer these water intrusion prevention tips to avoid basement seepage from the Insurance Information Institute:

Prevent basement water seepage

  • Reseal your basement. Water in the basement is often caused by cracks in building foundations or floor slabs. If you notice water seepage after heavy rain when you've never had a problem, it may mean that your once-waterproof cement floors and basement walls have deteriorated. Painting vulnerable areas with water sealant can prevent seepage.
  • Make sure water drains away from the building. Seepage is exacerbated by soil that has settled in a way to make water flow toward the building. After a storm, and especially if the ground is already saturated, rainwater that flows towards the building goes down the outside of the foundation wall, potentially through any cracks.
  • Install a backwater valve. Though less common than other causes of basement water, sewer backups are messy. Learn more about your sewer responsibilities and install and maintain a backwater valve, which allows sewage to go out, but not come back in.

Ice Dam on Roof in Plainfield?

3/2/2021 (Permalink)

We respond to water damage emergencies 24-hours a day in the Plainfield and Naperville areas.

Icicles and Water Damage

Icicles are beautiful, yet they can become a real safety hazard. When they get large enough, they can cause property damage. If you have icicles on your Plainfield home or commercial property roof, you have an ice dam. According to the University of Minnesota Extension (UMN), an ice dam is a ridge of ice that forms on a roof's edge. The ice creates a dam that prevents melting snow from draining properly. The water backs up and can cause rook leaks and water damage to the structure’s walls, ceilings, insulation, and other areas.

SERVPRO® of Plainfield/Naperville South respond to water damage emergencies 24-hours a day in the Plainfield and Naperville areas and offer these tips from the UMN for preventing ice dams:

  • New construction practices should follow or exceed the state code requirements for ceiling and roof insulation levels to prevent ice dams.
  • New construction should have a continuous, 100 percent effective air barrier through the ceiling. There should not be any air leakage from the house into the attic space.

Staying Healthy around Standing Water in Plainfield

2/4/2021 (Permalink)

Staying Healthy Around Standing Water in Plainfield:

Standing water of any kind in Plainfield can be a powerful source of disease. Floods can be worse due to the amount of water involved. Even small puddles can pose a risk.

Different kinds of debris can be found in floodwaters such as dead animals, rotted plants, and sewage, to name a few. If you have water damage inside your home, watch for debris in the home as well to include rotted food and electrical problems.

Viruses and bacteria can cause illnesses. To reduce your chances of catching something, SERVPRO of Plainfield / Naperville South suggests:

  • Washing dirty clothes and towels in hot water. Use bleach if possible
  • Remember that you can shake hands with an infected person and get infected.
  • Do not allow children to play in the flood water
  • Wash children’s hands before meals
  • Disinfect toys before letting children play with them
  • Use bleach or other disinfectants on hard surfaces
  • Keep your hands washed

Cuts and rashes can become infected. Protect yourself and others in Plainfield:

  • Avoid floodwaters if you have an open rash or a cut
  • Clean cuts or rashes. Cover them with a waterproof bandage
  • Clean cuts with soap and clean water
  • If a cut becomes red, swollen, or is oozing, get medical attention

The water leak happened so slowly that it took time to notice the water damage taking shape underneath my kitchen sink. Rain Gutter Problems in Plainfield?

1/5/2021 (Permalink)

Naperville residents count on us to restore water damage 24-hours a day!

Rain Gutter Maintenance Tips for Plainfield

Clogged rain gutters are one of the most common causes of water damage and one of the easiest types of water damage to prevent. Leaves and debris collect in rain gutters and downspouts over time, and if they are not cleaned before the next big storm, the water will overflow onto the roof, seep into the facia boards, and can even find its way into leaking window seals and foundation cracks. SERVPRO® of Plainfield/Naperville South sees firsthand the damage water can do to a structure, and the longer the leak goes unmitigated, the higher the cost of the repair will be. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has a great publication on protecting your home from water damage. Here are some tips from FEMA to maintain water runoff and drainage around your home:

  • Routinely clean and maintain rain gutters.
  • Make sure splash pads and downspouts drain away from the building.
  • Improve lot grading to ensure that stormwater drains away from the building.

I knew that every second counts when dealing with water damage, so I threw down as many towels as I could find to soak up as much water as possible and called SERVPRO® of Plainfield/Naperville South.

They asked me some questions over the phone to determine what equipment and how many technicians to send out and arrived on site quickly. After they had removed the excess water from the floor, they set up air movers and blowers to remove the excess water and completely dry the area to discourage warping and mold growth. Fortunately, they were able to save my floors, and after the drying and dehumidifying were completed, they cleaned, sanitized, and deodorized my kitchen, and I couldn’t be happier.

SERVPRO will Help with Sewage Cleanup

2/4/2020 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Plainfield / Naperville South is available 24/7 for any sewage emergency.

Water from sewer system backups should be considered very dangerous.  The water is grossly unsanitary and may contain bacteria and viruses that could cause serious illness.  Special training and equipment are necessary to safely clean this type of contamination.

There are three major types of contaminated water.  SERVPRO of Plainfield / Naperville South will inspect that contaminated water to determine the type of water and then plan the appropriate response to safely restore your home or business.

Category 1: "Clean Water"

This is water from a clean source, such as a broken clean water supply line or faucet.  If left untreated, category 1 water can quickly degrade into category 2 or 3 water depending upon such factors as time, temperature, and contact with contaminants.

  • Water from a clean source like a broken water line
  • If left untreated, can degrade into category 2 or 3

Category 2: "Gray Water"

This water has a significant level of contamination that could cause discomfort or illness if ingested.  Sources for category 2 water may include washing machine overflow; toilet overflow with some urine, but no feces; or dishwasher overflow.

  • May contain bacteria and viruses
  • Can quickly degrade into category 3 if left untreated

Category 3: "Black Water"

This water is grossly unsanitary and could cause severe illness or death if ingested, and any contact should be avoided.  Sources for category 3 water could include flooding from rivers or streams, water from beyond the toilet trap, water from the toilet bowl with feces, or standing water that has begun to support microbial growth.

  • May contain untreated sewage, harsh chemicals, and microbes
  • Water from flooding rivers or sewer backup

Sewage backup should be considered an emergency and dealt with as quickly as possible.  We are the water damage restoration specialists with specific training and expertise to safely restore your home or business.

Keep your pipes from Freezing

1/17/2020 (Permalink)

Keep your pipes from freezing.

As the cold weather descends upon the Chicagoland area, it is important to take the necessary steps to prepare for frozen pipes.

Here are some tips from the American Red Cross to help Prevent your pipes from freezing:

  • Keep garage doors closed if there are water supply lines in the garage.
  • Open kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors to allow warmer air to circulate around the plumbing. Be sure to move any harmful cleaners and household chemicals up out of the reach of children.
  • When the weather is very cold outside, let the cold water drip from the faucet served by exposed pipes. Running water through the pipe - even at a trickle - helps prevent pipes from freezing.
  • Keep the thermostat set to the same temperature both during the day and at night. By temporarily suspending the use of lower nighttime temperatures, you may incur a higher heating bill, but you can prevent a much more costly repair job if pipes freeze and burst.
  • If you will be going away during cold weather, leave the heat on in your home, set to a temperature no lower than 55° F.

If you experience water damage from a frozen pipe, please call SERVPRO of Plainfield / Naperville South at (630) 369-9710 to help.  We are available 24/7.
